Jesus often withdrew Himself into the wilderness to pray” Luke 5:16

To withdraw in Greek means to retire, to go back, to retreat.
Jesus sent his disciples off to retreat at a critical and potentially overwhelming moment during their journey.

“When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida…” Luke 9:10
It is interesting to note that just before being sent away, the disciples inform Jesus of John's beheading, and soon after this retreat together, they fed 5000 people.

Jesus, Himself took His followers to rest after hearing such devastating news. But also, to prepare for the physically and spiritually exhausting task of feeding 5000 people. He knew they would need rest to be able to feed those people.

Jesus led them away to retreat so that He and the disciples could rest and then concentrate.

We all need a break no matter how strong or high-achieving we think we are. We need time to escape the hustle and bustle of life and let our minds relax so we can think clearly and bring things into perspective. A retreat is a form of self-care.
